July 13, 2011—The FDA announced it has received nearly 3,000 adverse reports regarding transvaginal mesh and warned that the devices may do more harm than good.

Transvaginal mesh commonly it utilized in the treatment of pelvic organ prolapse, which occurs when muscles and ligaments weaken and causes significant pain. The surgical mesh is used to repair the weakened tissues and either reinforce of vaginal wall or support the urethra to provent urine leakage.

The FDA noted that serious complications are "not rare" and the most common problems are mesh erosion through the vagina, pain, infection, bleeding, pain during sexual intercourse, organ perforation and urinary problems.
 

Transvaginal Mesh Side Effects

Transvaginal mesh has been associated with serious side effects and injuries. Some of the side effects of vaginal mesh include:

  • Erosion of the vaginal tissue
  • Chronic vaginal drainage
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Perforation of the bowel, bladder or blood vessels
